The Dedication Copy, inscribed by Young on the dedication page, and with a small drawing, to Richard Phelan: “for Richard / with my love always / Ian / Feb 1976.” In addition to being Young’s lover and the dedicatee of this book, Phelan was the author of one of its 78 poems, co-author of another, and co-author with Young of three earlier collections: WHITE GARLAND (1969), COOL FIRE (1970), and LIONS IN THE STREAM (1971).
