Burton Weiss wrote: travel pieces by a gay American writer born in 1858 who lived most of his adult life in Europe, where he published two groundbreaking books under the pseudonym “Xavier Mayne”: IMRE: A MEMORANDUM (Naples, 1906), the first sympathetic and explicitly gay novel by an American, and THE INTERSEXES (1908), the first separately published study of homosexuality by an American.
